Due to British Telecommunication (BT)'s monopoly over the local loop infrastructure over which ADSL broadband services are delivered, and the limitations of the ADSL technology itself, service can only be provided where BT either has provided ADSL services itself or where it has developed a telephone exchange for the collocation of services from other service providers. To date, only a limited number of exchanges are available for collocation, and these are all exchanges in which already BT has ADSL service. BT's ADSL service coverage is currently approximately 80% of the UK population.
ISDN and Analogue connections can be provided as required to support low-bandwidth dial-up for areas outside current ADSL coverage. These do not currently form part of VPNnet and will require additional security, although we expect to resolve this difficulty in the future. Leased lines can be provided where additional capacity or guaranteed service is required.
For these reasons DataComms is unfortunately unable to provide a more extensive coverage than BT, although we are constantly monitoring the progress of broadband technologies as well as looking at alternative delivery mechanisms.
